Review of Baby I'm Bored by Dennis Scanland
From Music Emissions 2003
I will admit my past love for the Lemonheads. I could have been considered a fanatic at one point around Come On Feel. Of course I was somewhat excited about the notion of an Evan Dando album and finally his debut solo album has seen the light of day. Yes, it has been about 7 years since the last official Lemonheads album, which is one hell of a lot of time to gather material together. I must admit that I was a little bored with Baby I'm Bored. It just felt like it didn't have any depth to it. I found some tracks to grow on me over time, like "My Idea". Ultimately I was aching for something along the upbeat tracks on Come On Feel but I would assume that Dando has left that point in his songwriting career. Baby I'm Bored comes off totally relaxed and very mellow - almost to the point of considering Evan AOR material. One of the highlights on Bored is the Giant Sand backed up version of Ben Lee's "Hard Drive". Seems that Evan managed to get the GS boys in between gigs. They also play on the bland "In The Grass All Wine Colored". Hardcore Lemonhead fans may find some enjoyment in the album but if you are looking for another instantly catchy track like "Being Around" or "Outdoor Life" should look elsewhere.
